Over the last 15 years, British multi-instrumentalist and producer Kev Jones has carved a musical path unique amongst his peers as a producer and recording artist as well as co-founding a globally respected indie record label in Communion Music. With over fifteen years of international touring as a performer under his belt, he brings a balanced and broad perspective to music making and production, adopting a practical and holistic approach to producing records.
Kev initially studied at Leeds College of Music, did his undergraduate in Contemporary Music at Dartington College of Arts before getting a scholarship to do his master’s in jazz at Trinity Conservatoire in Greenwich, London. Feeling disillusioned with the session world he gravitated towards his original musical loves, that of guitar music, folk and rock, and eventually found himself at the centre of the nu-folk scene of the late 00’s alongside the likes of Noah and The Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons and The Vaccines. He founded the Communion club night initially as an antidote to the exploitative promoter culture in London and in an effort to create an environment where creative culture could flourish. It has evolved over nearly 20 years into an internationally renowned Record Label, Publisher and Promoter where he still operates as head of A&R for the label. Over the years he has signed and/or developed artists as broad as Catfish & The Bottlemen, Gotye, Michael Kiwanuka, Ben Howard, Daughter, Tamino, Lucy Rose, The Staves, Matt Corby, Nick Mulvey, Half Moon Run, and Wunderhorse.
In parallel with founding Communion, he formed iconic folk duo Bear’s Den who wrote and recorded multiple studio albums and toured extensively for over a decade across the US, Europe and Australia, headlining festivals and arenas as well as opening for amongst others, Neil Young, Kings of Leon, Daughter and Mumford and Sons. The band were nominated for an Ivor Novello for best song musically and lyrically, released an orchestral record ‘Fragments’ that premiered at the Elbphilarmonie opera house in Hamburg, and wrote the soundtrack to the Apple TV show Trying. As a multi-instrumentalist for the band he covered a range of instruments on stage including drums, bass, vocals, piano and guitar. Choosing to focus on producing after 15 years on the road, he played his swan song with Bear’s Den by way of a sold-out farewell show at the Royal Albert Hall in March 2025.
During his time with the band, he also began to turn his hand to producing, mentored by long-time collaborator Ian Grimble initially via his session work with Matt Corby, Daughter and Benjamin Francis Leftwich, he soon began making records himself. As a producer he’s worked with Brodie Barclay, Lucy Rose, Matthew and the Atlas and made the critically acclaimed debut ‘Cub’ by Wunderhorse. He has recently taken up residency at the Communion Studio in Crouch End, North London, which is part of the Church complex. Working closely with Rockfeild engineer Jack Boston he has recently finished records with guitar bands The North and Tooth as well as folk giants Amber Run, all due for release in 2026.
